Our project examines tract-level homelessness and housing indicators in San Francisco from 2020 to 2024. We aligned multiple datasets onto the same spatial-temporal scale, aggregating and interpolating point-level data (quarterly encampment counts, daily 311 calls, and daily eviction reports) to census tracts by month. We also disaggregated monthly ZIP code-level median rent data to census tracts by weighting with HUD crosswalks and normalizing with ACS baseline values.\nUsing multipliers from the literature applied to encampment counts, we generated tract-level estimates of the street homeless population. These estimates and metrics were integrated into an interactive dashboard featuring: (1) a choropleth map showing metrics by tract and month; (2) line graphs of street homelessness and the distribution of tents, structures, and vehicles for a selected census tract; (3) a line graph of monthly median rent that updates by ZIP code; and (4) a regression analysis linking 311 calls to tract-level characteristics.\nOverall, our dashboard highlights spatial and temporal patterns in homelessness and housing, helping policymakers and community organizations better target interventions, allocate resources, and make informed housing policy decisions.\nuchicago-2026-capp30122/project-all-access-livable-housing project-all-access-livable-housing created by GitHub Classroom Python 0 1 ","date":"1 March 2026","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/projects/all-access-housing/","section":"Projects","summary":"","title":"All Access Livable Housing","type":"projects"},{"content":"","date":"1 March 2026","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/authors/amanda-song/","section":"","summary":"","title":"Amanda Song","type":"authors"},{"content":"","date":"1 March 2026","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/authors/amy-lin/","section":"","summary":"","title":"Amy Lin","type":"authors"},{"content":"","date":"1 March 2026","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/authors/anees-amjad/","section":"","summary":"","title":"Anees Amjad","type":"authors"},{"content":"","date":"1 March 2026","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/authors/apollinaire-abi/","section":"","summary":"","title":"Apollinaire Abi","type":"authors"},{"content":"","date":"1 March 2026","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/authors/ashanti-hatchett/","section":"","summary":"","title":"Ashanti Hatchett","type":"authors"},{"content":"","date":"1 March 2026","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/authors/azatbek-nurbekov/","section":"","summary":"","title":"Azatbek Nurbekov","type":"authors"},{"content":" Title: BreakingBureau Subtitle: Immigration News, Labor Market \u0026amp; Stock Market Analysis. Who has access to these open spaces?$\nWe use 2018 land use data from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, which classifies open spaces into five subcategories: Recreational, Golf Courses, Conservation, Non-Public, and Trails/Greenways. We also spatialize Vacant Land from the same dataset to argue that not all open space can be understood in the same way.\nTo understand who has access to open space (that falls within the five subcategories), we assign each land parcel from the spatial dataset to a census tract, and produce socio-demographic statistics at tract level. We downloaded census tract spatial data from the pygris package and accessed statistical data on the tracts from the American Community Survey API. These include attributes such as median household income, race, and property values. The project explores how accessibility to key services—such as healthcare, public education, public transport, grocery stores, and parks—affects median property prices and other economic indicators. The project involves web scraping, bulk data downloads, data cleaning and preprocessing, and an analysis framework to generate an Accessibility Index for each ZIP code. This index is meant to help users understand the impact of essential services on housing affordability and highlight areas that require better urban planning. Our initial hypothesis was that the housing prices were positively correlated with the Accessibility Index and in order to test and better visualize this, we developed 3 key visualizations on Dash: a choropleth map, a scatterplot and horizontal bar plots to compare 2 specific zip codes. Interestingly, we found that the converse of our hypothesis was true.\n","date":"11 March 2025","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/projects/zip-link/","section":"Projects","summary":"","title":"Zip Specifically, the goal of this project was to study the biggest demographic shifts in Chicago and study potential causes behind those changes. To this end, we gathered demographic data using the United States Census American Community Survey (ACS) API and housing/economic data from a number of secondary sources, including the DePaul Housing Institute, the City of Chicago, and the Law Center for Better Housing.\nUsing a fuzzy geomatching algorithm, we grouped our tract-level Census data into community area data. When run as an app, this project allows a user to study the biggest demographic shifts out of all Chicago neighborhoods, visualize these changes, and investigate contemperaneous change in housing or economic measurements.\n","date":"15 March 2024","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/projects/exploring-change-chicago/","section":"Projects","summary":"","title":"Exploring Change in Chicago","type":"projects"},{"content":" ZhenWwvv/30122-Film-Insight Python 1 0 ","date":"15 March 2024","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/projects/film-insight/","section":"Projects","summary":"","title":"Film Insight","type":"projects"},{"content":"The project aims to analyze food access within the Chicago area. The scope of this work provides an updated food access metric for 2022 to understand communities’ post-pandemic food access and shows how food access has changed in the city over time. The Atlas Food Access Research data from 2010, 2015, and 2019 is used as a historic food access metric. To recreate the 2022 metric, grocery store data from the City of Chicago are paired with household income information from the United States Census. The goal is to see how what percentage of County Care’s network can be independently verified. First, we scraped County Care’s find a provider intermittently from February 16th until March 6th, 2024 to construct an original sample database of their healthcare service provider network. Second, we attempt to verify that each located provider is accurately represented by matching them either in the State of Illinois’ IMPACT database or in the National NPI Registry. IMPACT is a state database that tracks all providers approved to bill Illinois Medicaid. If no trace of a provider exists in IMPACT, the provider is not eligible to treat patients on Medicaid. The NPI registry is a registry of all individual or corporate entities that need to bill health insurance. Matching on the NPI is important as a way to verify a provider’s contact information and residence in Illinois, as well as a source for future researchers as NPI numbers, are very close to unique identifiers in the healthcare space. From this analysis, we estimate groups of providers that while listed in County Care’s directory are not actually seeing or billing Medicaid patients, and whose presence in County Care’s directory is misleading to patients and inflates the strength of their network. Our initial match percentages reflect the difficulty of linking records with inconsistent identifiers, but we hope that this data can be of use to us and future researchers examining health insurance network adequacy.\nuchicago-mscapp-projects/Ghost-Hunter Looking for Ghosts in Medicaid Provider Directories Python 0 0 ","date":"15 March 2024","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/projects/ghost-hunter/","section":"Projects","summary":"","title":"Ghost Hunter","type":"projects"},{"content":"","date":"15 March 2024","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/authors/zhen-wang/","section":"","summary":"","title":"Grace Zhen Wang","type":"authors"},{"content":"","date":"15 March 2024","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/authors/kiran-sunil-jivnani/","section":"","summary":"","title":"Kiran Sunil Jivnani","type":"authors"},{"content":"","date":"15 March 2024","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/authors/onurcan-buyukkalkan/","section":"","summary":"","title":"Onurcan Buyukkalkan","type":"authors"},{"content":" This project seeks to explore the multifaceted impacts of climate change and its distributional effects on communities across the United States. We aim to understand how climate-induced factors such as floods, heatwaves, and hurricanes disproportionately affect vulnerable populations particularly in redlined communities. Leveraging data from the EPA, FEMA, Richmond Redlining dataset, Census, and a well-designed Climate Vulnerability Index, we will provide a tool to explore the ways climate change will affect communities differently and how those impacts may (or may not) disproportionately affect marginalized groups.
